Implementing & Optimising Genomic Prediction Tools for commercial Merino Producers - Project.

The aim of this Integrated R&D Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) project is to demonstrate and identify clear pathways for commercial Merino sheep producers to utilise a single or combination of current and emerging genetic and genomic tools in their ewe and ram selections to successfully improve genetic gain.

  • How to get involved in the project?

The current tools will include Flock Profile (FP), Ram Team Manager/Tracker, Genomic Breeding Values (GBVs - developed in project P.PSH.1483) and Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs).

The project will help you use these tools to make well informed selection decisions for your replacement rams and ewes.

  • Find out more about the Genomic Only Breeding Value development.

A R&D project (2023-2024) aimed to obtain experience and validate the value of genomic testing commercial Merino Sheep. For the moderately accurate Genomic Only Breeding Value (gBV) the break-even cost of genotyping males in a commercial multiplier flock was approximately $250.

  • Where to Genonic Only Breeding Values (gBVs) fit?

The genomic tools currently available to the Merino industry include - Flock Profile; Genomic Only Breeding Values and Australian Sheep Breeding Values.
